چکیده

Using the 12-m APEX telescope, we have detected redshifted emission from the 157.74 μm [CII] line in the z = 4.4074 quasar BRI 1335-0417. The linewidth and redshift are in good agreement with previous observations of high-J CO line emission. We measure a [CII] line luminosity, L[CII] = (16.4 ± 2.6) × 109 L , making BRI 1335-0417 the most luminous, unlensed [CII] line emitter known at high-redshift. The [CII]-to-FIR luminosity ratio of (5.3 ± 0.8) × 10−4 is ∼3× higher than expected for an average object with a FIR luminosity LFIR = 3.1 × 1013 L , if this ratio were to follow the trend observed in other FIR-bright galaxies that have been detected in [CII] line emission. These new data suggest that the scatter in the [CII]-to-FIR luminosity ratio could be larger than previously expected for high luminosity objects. BR1335-0417 has a similar FIR luminosity and [CII]/CO luminosity compared to local ULIRGS and appears to be a gas-rich merger forming stars at a rate of a few thousand solar masses per year.

Formation of a Quasar Host Galaxy through a Wet Merger 1.4 Billion Years after the Big Bang

We present high-resolution Very Large Array imaging of the molecular gas in the host galaxy of the high redshift quasar BRI 1335–0417 (z = 4.41). Our CO(J=2→1) observations have a linear resolution of 0.15 (1.0 kpc) and resolve the molecular gas emission both spatially and in velocity. The molecular gas in BRI 1335–0417 is extended on scales of 5 kpc, and shows a complex structure. At least thr...

Dust and CO lines in high redshift quasars

We report the results of a systematic search for redshifted rotational lines of CO and dust emission towards a sample of 9 high redshift radio quiet quasars using the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer. Dust emission at ∼ 1.35 mm has been found in 5 out of the 9 objects. These results confirm the corresponding previous detections with the MPIfR bolometer at the 30-m. No 3 mm continuum was dete...

Sensitive Radio Observations of High-Redshift Dusty QSOs

We present sensitive radio continuum imaging at 1.4 GHz and 4.9 GHz of seven high redshift QSOs selected for having a 240 GHz continuum detection, which is thought to be thermal dust emission. We detect radio continuum emission from four of the sources: BRI 0952−0115, BR 1202−0725, LBQS 1230+1627B, and BRI 1335−0417. The radio source in BR 1202−0725 is resolved into two components, coincident w...

The second detection of CO at redshift larger than 4

We report the detection with the IRAM interferometer at 3mm of J=5-4 CO line in the radio quiet quasar BRI 1335-0415 at redshift of z = 4.41. After BR 1202-0725 at z = 4.69 (Ohta et al. 1996, Omont et al. 1996a), this is the second detection of CO at z > 3. The integrated line intensity is 2.8± 0.3 Jy km s−1 with a linewidth of 420±60 km s−1. The dust continuum emission has also been mapped at ...

High resolution CO imaging of high redshift QSO host galaxies

We review recent high-resolution CO observations of distant QSOs obtained at the Very Large Array. The aim of these observations is to resolve the molecular gas distribution in these extreme objects both spatially and in velocity space. They provide unique information regarding the small-scale distribution, the extent, and the brightness temperatures of the molecular gas in these early systems....
